Walden Woods

Branching Out

Walden Woods

In 1845, Henry David Thoreau retreated to a small cabin he hand-built, where he lived and wrote amidst the quiet splendor of Walden Pond. Almost one hundred and fifty years later, Grammy-award winning musician and conservationist Don Henley founded Walden Woods Project to preserve and protect the environment that had inspired Thoreau’s Walden. As part of the fundraising and the campaign to raise awareness, WWP partnered with American Forests, the nation’s oldest nonprofit citizens conservation organization, to harvest seeds from Red Maple and Weeping Willow trees in Walden Woods. The seeds are germinated into small trees, and these direct descendants of Walden then become available to the public for purchase. Proceeds benefit WWP and American Forests.
