The American public came to know Jackie Joyner-Kersee for her achievements on the UCLA basketball court and the Olympic track and field. Today, the American public knows Jackie Joyner-Kersee for her mission to help people, especially those in her neighborhood. In 1988, she established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Community Foundation, which joined with the East St. Louis Youth Center Foundation in 1997 to form The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation. The Foundation provided funding to build the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center, now in its sixth year, on 37 acres in East St. Louis, Illinois.
